The South-West chieftain of the New Nigeria People\u2019s Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the highly revered traditional ruler, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland. The monarch passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a solemn condolence message issued on Monday, Ambassador Ajadi described the late Oba Adetona as \u201ca timeless icon of Yoruba royalty, an agent of peace, and a pillar of development whose reign brought honour not only to the Ijebu people but to the entire Yoruba nation and Nigeria at large.\u201d He added, \u201cThe news of Kabiyesi\u2019s passing is devastating. It is indeed the end of an era.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona ascended the throne of his forefathers on April 2, 1960, making him one of Africa\u2019s longest-reigning monarchs. His 65-year reign was marked by transformational leadership, bold advocacy for good governance, and unwavering dedication to constitutional democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A prince from the House of Anikinaiya in the Ijebu Kingdom, Oba Adetona was widely respected for his modern outlook, forthrightness, and ability to bridge the gap between tradition and progress. His death occurred just hours after the passing of his close friend and political ally, former President Muhammadu Buhari, drawing emotional responses from many across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambassador Ajadi noted the coincidence of their deaths as deeply symbolic: \u201cIt is deeply symbolic that Oba Adetona left this world within hours of his close friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari. Nigeria has lost two of its greatest elder statesmen on the same day. May their souls find eternal peace.\u201d He also extended heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the Council of Obas in Ogun State, and the people of Ijebuland, urging them to draw strength from the rich legacy Oba Adetona leaves behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs we mourn, we must also celebrate a life well-lived,\u201d Ajadi said. \u201cKabiyesi was not just a traditional ruler\u2014he was a national conscience. He lived through some of Nigeria\u2019s most turbulent political periods and remained a steadfast voice for justice and order.\u201d Under Oba Adetona\u2019s leadership, Ijebuland witnessed significant socio-economic progress, including advancements in education, infrastructure, and commerce. He was also a strong advocate for the relevance and autonomy of the traditional institution within a democratic framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ajadi concluded his tribute by encouraging young Nigerians to learn from the monarch\u2019s life of integrity and public service: \u201cLet the life of Oba Adetona teach us about selflessness, courage, and service. He stood for truth even when it was unpopular. That is the true mark of leadership.\u201d Oba Adetona\u2019s passing marks the end of a monumental era in Yoruba history\u2014one that will be remembered for vision, reform, and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
